Embracing the Adventure of Book Marketing

Marketing my book has been quite the journey. Everyone says you should start months before publication. But at that stage, I was still figuring out how to get the book published at all. I made a few TikToks, set up Instagram, wrote a list, gathered hashtags, and convinced myself I had made a strong start. Spoiler alert: I hadn’t.

Since the book launched, I’ve been working hard to catch up. I’ve listened to TikTok after TikTok from marketers, influencers, and more marketers—all offering hints, tips, and “guaranteed” strategies. I’ve tried many of them, and, unsurprisingly, still nothing.

The Challenge of Finding Effective Strategies

There are endless paid options, but how do you separate the wheat from the chaff? I genuinely don’t know. People often say, “Reach out to published authors for help.” While you can get some guidance, every author’s journey is unique. So, the support only goes so far.

This week, I’ve taken time off work to get my house in order. Like most indie authors, I work full-time. I’m at a stage in life where I’m starting to think seriously about retirement. This thought gives me a renewed sense of motivation to organise my writing life properly.

Balancing Work and Writing

I already have a children’s picture book in print. If you’re reading this, I hope you’ve bought it! If not, I highly recommend it. But I also have a dozen other books half-written. My first is an adult fiction novel, and I truly believe it has potential. But I need to sit down and finish it. That’s the challenge: I have so many ideas, and I’m working on them all at once.

The best advice I’ve been given is to find your genre, find your drive, and stick with it to perfect your craft. But I can’t. I genuinely love each and every half-written story I have.

Creating a Comprehensive Marketing Plan

So here I am, with a week off and a very long to-do list. It includes creating a marketing plan, a TikTok content plan, research, promotion, contacting libraries and schools, Facebook promotion, capturing new book ideas, and perhaps even trying to finish the first adult fiction book I started.

Setting Realistic Goals

As I dive into this week, I remind myself to set realistic goals. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with everything I want to accomplish. I’ll take it one step at a time. Each small victory will lead me closer to my larger goals.

Engaging with My Audience

Engaging with my audience is crucial. I want to create a community around my books. This means responding to comments, sharing behind-the-scenes content, and asking for feedback. I want readers to feel connected to my journey and excited about what’s to come.

Exploring New Platforms

I’m also considering exploring new platforms. While TikTok and Instagram have been my main focus, there are other spaces where I can share my work. Perhaps I’ll try Pinterest or even start a blog. Each platform offers unique ways to connect with readers.

The Importance of Perseverance

I know that perseverance is key. Marketing a book isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. I’ll keep pushing forward, even when the path feels unclear. Each effort counts, and I believe that my stories will find their audience.

Celebrating Small Wins

As I work through my to-do list, I’ll celebrate the small wins. Whether it’s completing a TikTok video or reaching out to a library, every step is progress. I’ll remind myself that this journey is about growth and learning.

Looking Ahead

Maybe you can pop back at the end of the week and see how I got on. In the meantime, wish me luck. I’m excited about what lies ahead. I hope to inspire young minds and foster a love for storytelling within families.

I believe in the power of stories to ignite imagination. Let’s embark on this journey together!

Here we go...

So, I’ve never written a blog before and I’m not entirely sure where to begin. What I do know is that I want to help other indie authors realise their dreams. When I was 11, I wanted to be an author.
